Recently I was asked to create a utility that would analyze 78 spreadsheets, each of which contained hundreds of thousands of entries. Specific information in each spreadsheet needed to be aggregated. The first spreadsheet had been analyzed by a team of four people. Based on the time it took the team to analyze one spreadsheet, it was estimated that the entire project would take over 10,000 hours. A tool I designed in 8 hours analyzed the remaining spreadsheets in less than 1 hour.
